About Thomas James Scott
Thomas James Scott is a filmmaker and a lecturer in film and TV Production at The Belfast Film and Television School in Belfast Metropolitan College, Northern Ireland. Prior to joining Belfast Met in May 2015, he taught at Springvale Learning, and Ulster University. Thomas, along with his co-coordinator Alan McCracken, was the 2018 winner of the Creative and Cultural Skills Northern Ireland Creative Tutor Award.
He is a graduate of Ulster University, and Queen’s University Belfast. He holds a Ba Hons in Film and Visual Studies (QUB), an MRes in the Arts (UU), a PhD in Film (UU), and a CIT and a PGCE in FE (UU). Both his MRes and Doctoral work studied American cinematic depictions of the Irish between 1896 and 1930. Thomas conducted part of his research in Los Angeles, where he stayed at UCLA and studied in their Film and Television Archive. He has published his work in journals, and presented his research output at conferences, in Ireland, England, and America – including the prestigious American Conference for Irish Studies, in Chicago, in April 2013. Although he is primarily a lecturer, he began his media career in film and TV production, and continues to work on media projects in his spare time. In addition to producing and directing (and sometimes writing), he has worked in a range of roles from sound recordist, to camera operator, to set design. Thomas has worked with some of the most talented filmmakers on the Northern Irish indie scene, including Brian Mulholland, Steve Earley, and Margaret McGoldrick. In his younger years (the 90s!) he was involved with a number of theatre groups, primarily as an actor, but also as a writer and set builder.
Thomas has produced and/or directed award winning short films and music videos. His most recent projects include Romancing Revolution (an official music video for The Crossfire Hurricanes, which screened at festivals in Europe, picking a Belfast Square Short Film Award in Jan 2017), You Belfast (which was screen at Festivals in the US, Europe, and India – where it won the best Smartphone Film Award. Thomas Produced, Wrote, and Directed the short), and Give Me All I need (an official music video for Northern Irish Band the Rusty Taste of Sweetness). His most recent project, a documentary titled Kate Price: Hollywood’s Irish Mother, is currently in post-production. The film highlights the film career of Irish born actress Kate Price, who appeared in almost 300 American Films between 1910 and 1937.
His script ‘The Funeral Director’ was first written in 2008, when Thomas was studying screenwriting at Queens University. He decided to redraft the script in 2017, and submitted it to screenwriting festivals, to test it’s potential. He is big fan of Graham Linehan, the creator or co-creator of a number of successful sitcoms, such as Father Ted, and the IT Crowd, among others. He was born and still lives in Northern Ireland, is married with two kids (and a third due in July). He is a diehard Manchester United supporter, and along with his son Liam, loves attending pro wrestling events.
